Teenagers Rush to Get Tattoos
Jan. 27, 2006 - West Peoria
Josh Brogadir
A new state law that took effect January 1 has teenagers piling into tattoo
parlors now that they can make the decision to get them on their own.
Getting tattoos has joined buying lottery tickets, voting in elections, and
enlisting in the military as things 18-year olds can do without their parents'
permission.
So, we went to ‘I'm No Angel’ tattoo parlor in West Peoria to find out what the
buzz is all about.
It's not the first time Travis Williamson's gotten a tattoo. But it's the first
time he's gotten one, following the law.
Williamson said, “At 18, I think you should do what you want, pretty much,
you're almost out of high school, it's your own life after that.”
And while his left arm probably knew what his right arm was doing before, a new
Illinois law now makes his left arm legal.
“I think it's good, I think it's really good, 18-year olds should have a lot
more say so in what they get to do with themselves,“ said tattoo artist ‘S8N.’
Business is good at ‘I'm No Angel’ tattoo parlor.
“As far as I could remember always had a pencil in my hand,“ said ‘S8N.’
Even better now that 18-year olds no longer need their parents' permission to
get inked up.
“We see more 18 to 21 year olds come through asking about it and get prices and
stuff.”
Travis wasn't the only teenager coming in for a tattoo. Under 18 means your
parents have to get your back.
Eighteen and over, your choice.
“Yeah, I cried,“ said Claire Bohannon.
Your pain.
“No, no (regrets) not at all.”
Critics of the law think under 21 you're too young to make the decision to mark
up your body for good.
Teenagers who love to get them say it's a permanent reminder they no longer have
to keep under wraps.
“Trust me I plan on getting more,“ said Williamson.
“Definitely ain't coming off, not unless you got a laser gun,” said ‘S8N.’
